The fourth annual Gold Coast Open House will open the doors of interesting and architecturally significant buildings and locations, inviting the public to take a behind the scenes look at places they may have only glimpsed from the street on Saturday 27 October 2018.
Amongst heritage gems to sports venues and inspiring buildings, homes, churches, schools, universities, museums, art galleries, TV and radio stations, public utilities and workplaces, the following buildings within our region will be open to the public:
Gold Coast Desalination Plant Boyd Street, Tugun
Pre-booked guided tours only from 9:30am - 2:30pm
The Gold Coast Desalination Plant converts sea water into drinking water. As a climate-resilient source of water, the plant supplies drinking water to the SEQ Water Grid, and ramps up supply in times of flood or drought, or when conventional water treatment plants are offline. This hour-long tour through the will take you through the process of separating dissolved salts and other minerals from seawater to produce drinking water. Tour participants will be able to sample the water from the plant at the end of the tour.
Currumbin Waters House 172 Tierney Drive, Currumbin Waters
Pre-booked guided tours only from 10:00 - 11:30am
Get a rare glimpse into one of the region’s most interesting residences. This preserved views from the street of the bushland beyond, provided valuable flat play space for a young family, afforded privacy from the street and enabled views within the tree canopy.
Southern Cross University - Building C Terminal Drive, Bilinga
Guided tours hourly from 10:00am - 2:00pm. No bookings required.
The local indigenous community used this land as a meeting spot, a connected space. The building is designed to connect the campus buildings with the people, community and culture of the region in a welcoming and inclusive space. Take a tour of the building which won the Best Educational Facility over $10M category at the Gold Coast Master Builders Awards 2018.
