Get Set for the Games in Currumbin and Coolangatta

Posted on Friday, December 15, 2017

Up to six million additional journeys are expected to be made during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April 2018. To ensure that the Games can provide reliable transport options for athletes, spectators and the community, they need to make some temporary changes to the road and public transport networks in the lead up to and during the Games.

It will be important for you to know about these changes so you can factor them into your Games time travel planning. For Southern Gold Coast businesses, the events in the following areas will create an impact on businesses in the immediate and surrounding areas.

Currumbin Beachfront will provide the stage for the 20km Race Walk and the start and finish of the Cycling Time Trial and Cycling Road Race. The cycling events also wind through Currumbin Valley which will provide prime vantage points for these free events. Find out more

Coolangatta Beachfront will provide the stage for epic encounters of high intensity setting, spiking and blocking. The Beach Volleyball is held over seven days from Friday 6 April 2018 to Thursday 12 April 2018. Find out more about what’s happening in Coolangatta. Find out more

Planning now is proving to be a valuable exercise. With restaurants scattered across the city, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games pose significant challenges for the Ridgeway Group.

The business, which owns some of the Gold Coast’s best known eateries including BiN 72 in Coolangatta and Little Truffle, employs 150 staff all who will need to travel from their homes to work each day.

“There is going to be an unprecedented number of people on the Coast in April next year, so we want to be prepared to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” owner and head chef Daniel Ridgeway said.

Daniel said the Get Set for the Games Travel Advice for Business Program had helped them identify the challenge some of their staff will face in getting to and from work at this time.

“We are now exploring the best way to manage Games time conditions and working with our staff that will need to make changes to the way they normally travel to work. We have begun planning what goods we can stockpile, re-timing when we can accept deliveries and if we should be delivery sharing.”

The Get Set for the Games Team is ready to help your business with your Games time planning.
