There are a lot of exciting works and events happening on the Southern Gold Coast over the next few months as we get set for the Games. Keep up-to-date with what’s on by following my updates on facebook.com/gailoneilldivision14.
Golden Four Drive works
Upgrades are continuing on Golden Four Drive (Dune Street to Short Street). Road resurfacing, widening and new kerb and channelling will accommodate road cycle lanes. New line markings will formalise parking bays on the western side of Golden Four Drive. Footpaths will be widened and pedestrian crossings will be raised on eastern side streets. Works are scheduled to be completed by December 2017.
Golden Four Drive Parking
A four hour parking area along Golden Four Drive (Musgrave Street to Gibson Street) has been approved by Council. Signage and dedicated parking areas will be installed. A notice will be sent out to residents about how to apply for a parking permit.
Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway
The Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway concept design and planning is complete. A recommended alignment and landscaping plan for a 3.5 metre wide Oceanway (Toolona Street to Matters Street) has been developed. Factors such as existing vegetation and proximity of the path to private property have been taken into account. Local residents who will be affected by the works have received information on the design and have been asked for feedback.
Gateways Public Art Commission
The City’s major public art commission ‘Gateways’ will be installed at the Southern Site on the Gold Coast Highway north of the airport with landscaping to commence shortly at this site.
Dredging has commenced with approximately 30,000 cubic metres of sand being deposited north along Palm Beach beyond 3rd Avenue. Annual dredging of Currumbin Creek allows for the nourishment of adjacent beaches.
Essential major repairs are underway to repair the Kirra Beach pavilion. The northern carpark has been zoned as a construction and storage facility. Council intends for at least half the carpark to remain open during weekends and over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Works are scheduled to be completed by January 2018.
Christmas Banners and Lights
Christmas banners are being installed along Pacific Parade (Currumbin), Marine Parade (Kirra and Coolangatta) and Griffith Street (Coolangatta). The three Norfolk Pines at Pacific Parade (Currumbin), QEII Park Marine Parade (Coolangatta) and near the Kirra roundabout have been illuminated with Christmas lighting.
Council is investigating the installation of bollard lighting along the Oceanway (Wyberba Street to Elizabeth Street). The installation of the lighting is expected to commence between mid to late January. Local residents who will be affected by these works will be notified by mail in the next fortnight.
Water Refill Stations
Members of the community who use Pat Fagan Park at Rainbow Bay or Currumbin Beach (alongside Pacific Parade) will soon be able to keep hydrated by accessing one of our new water refill stations. These all-in-one water refill stations are a part of a fleet of 14 being installed across the Gold Coast, and boast two bottle filling points as well as a drinking bubbler on each unit. This is part of the City’s broader campaign to opt for tap water over bottled water to reduce the impact on our environment while saving you money. Be smart, choose tap and enjoy your refill!
